Wine, Women, Song—and More

This last Saturday we attended a unique event to benefit the Monterey Museum of Art.  Sponsored by Oya Salon in Monterey, and called “Fierce Fashion, Artful Circumstances,” this last of an “Appetite for Art” series took place at Homescapes in Carmel.  It was an enjoyable combination of unique delights:  art from the museum and Weston Gallery, appetizers from Mundaka, chocolates from Lula’s and desserts from Petals and Pastries, a fashion show, re-mix music with a D.J., and wine from Scheid Vineyards.

The guests provided as much of a show as the models, with everyone taking the theme of New York Fashion Week quite seriously.  We wandered around Homescapes, looking at the art and furnishings, sitting on a couch now and then, looking through a fashion book or two, sipping wine and anticipating the official fashion show.
The highlight of the evening was the parade of models in their elegant vintage clothing from Foxy Couture of Monterey, with hairstyling by Oya Salon. Each of the models walked to the artwork that inspired their look and then posed for the guests and photographers.  We loved seeing that two of our former local high school students were involved in the show—one, Emily Martin, was a model; the other, Sehra Evans, had created one of the elaborate hair designs.
Throughout the event, wine was provided by Scheid Vineyards, which has just opened a tasting room in Carmel.  Two of the wines that we tried were their 2008 Chardonnay ($22) and 2008 Pinot Noir ($28). The Chardonnay, a Gold Medal Winner at the 2010 Chronicle Wine competition, is a medium bodied wine with aromas and flavors of pineapple and melon; the Pinot Noir, a Double Gold Winner at the 2011 San Francisco International Wine Competition, is light and smooth and berryish. Both of them were smooth accompaniments to the appetizers and ones that we could see buying.
Scheid’s new tasting room is at San Carlos and 7th and is open daily from ll-7.  The story of Scheid Vineyards is interesting.  You might want to check it out, and to read about their many other varietals, at http://www.scheidwines.com/.
In all, a delightful evening with lots of treats for all the senses-- and some outrageously creative ideas for new hair styles for your resident wine bloggers.
